"Providing Training for the Leaders of Tomorrow"

The Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter is extremely proud of the dynamic educational programs executed under the Guide Right national fraternity project. The chapters programs are geared towards the students' self-development respect for ones own culture, and self-worth and achievement. The Alexandria-Fairfax Alumni Chapter Guide Right Programs serves to excite, educate, and challenge the youth of our community. All of these programs have received recognition awards from the schools for their presence and efforts. The following activities are planned and actively implemented under the umbrella of the Guide Right Programs.

Kappa League - The Kappa League program is centered on providing mentoring, tutoring, and direction through leadership. The emphasis of the program is on students between the ages of 10 to 15. The Kappa League is an organization oriented toward helping young men grow and develop their leadership talents in every phase of human endeavor. It provides both challenging and rewarding experiences, which richly enhance their lives. Students are always encouraged to establish academic and personal goals, as well as, providing community service. This group meets monthly at Thomas Jefferson Middle School located in Arlington VA.

Partners in Education - The Partners in Education program works with 5th and 6th graders at Gladys K. McGogney Elementary School located in South East Washington DC. Participants develop "I am Profiles", study current events, address issues relating to peer pressure and continuing education, and enhance academic skills. An annual oratorical competition during a school assembly recognizes the efforts of the participants. The program activities have included trips to the Wizards game, career days, and various guest speakers.

Know Your History - The Know Your History program is a comprehensive study on African American history. Visual aids are used; notes made by a History major, Internet sources, artifacts and antiques. The goal of the program is to use history as a vehicle to enlighten youth about culture and heritage, and about themselves. The information is used to be a tool to help deal with social barriers. This program holds both boys and girls ages 8-13. The program moves through the history from Africans, through slavery up to the present.

JEB Stuart - The JEB Stuart program involves members of the chapter to mentor members of the high schools basketball program. This programs serves to involve the students in more than just basketball. During the basketball season chapter members attend the basketball games and help provide lectures and speak to the group. Topics of discussion involve career choices, college selection, and academic achievement.

Thomas Jefferson Middle School Mentoring Program - Thomas Jefferson Middle School Mentoring program works to encourage, tutor, and mentor male youths ages 10-14 in all academic specialties. The program guides the youth in achieving their scholastic potential, and to be a positive role model. Academic assistance is provided, mentoring the students in preparation of pursuing their career goals.

Kamp Kappa - Kamp Kappa is the jewel of the Guide Right Programs. There is no other program like this one in all of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Kamp Kappa is designed to provide a positive outdoor and educational experience for fifty (50) young men, ages 10-15, primarily inner city youths. The kamp is held at the Hemlock Overlook Park in Clifton, Virginia, a remote area of the county that remains undeveloped. The youth are housed in cabins, managed by volunteer counselors, members of the chapter. The kamp is structured to provide activities that foster the spirit of team building; self respect, and respect for others. There is instruction on substance abuse, cultural diversity, and personal hygiene. Each day is divided into the morning, afternoon, and evening sessions. The morning sessions are normally devoted to leadership training on the nature courses that have a series of obstacles that challenge the youth. The afternoon sessions include fishing, canoeing, hiking, and swimming. During the kamp a street law session is held. The presiding Judge is Brother Gerald Lee, Judge of the Alexandria Federal Circuit Court. The youth are organized into prosecutors, defense lawyers, witness's etc. The drama is played out in Judge Lee's courtroom, which provides an added sense of drama.
